Miniatures and Other Alice Things

Norwegian Miniature artist Christel Jensen created this very cool miniature Alice in Wonderland Tea Party. Click the link for many more pictures. Jensen's site is very cool, although I have to admit that I'm a sucker for miniatures. Look at these cakes!!! How does she do it?

My dear readers, now that I'm not posting every day, I have a SERIOUS BACKLOG.

Camille Rose Garcia Illustrated Alice

My giveaway of the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland illustrated by Camille Rose Garcia ended today and I wanted to write up a review of the book, which you can purchase here on Amazon.

Camille Rose Garcia's Alice

When the publisher, It Books, approached me about doing a giveaway for this book, I was immediately excited, because I like art and have been a fan of Camille Rose Garcia for a number of years. She does creepy fairytale type art and books. I was also really excited to find that they wanted to send me a review copy.

Camille Rose Garcia's White Rabbit

This book is really beautifully made. I collect books and wish that I could say that I only have a small collection! These days, I have to be selective about what books I keep and then the rest I take to the used book store. This book is definitely in the keeper category! A great deal of care has been put into making it the kind of item a book-loving sort of person can get into. The jacket is beautifully illustrated and has glossy spot varnish on the black areas, and a capital A has been debossed in foil on the front cover of the book. If I had any wish for the book, I would have liked a different typeface for the text, because the text ends up looking a bit small. But that's my only real complaint. It has beautiful endpapers (I love it when a publisher pays attention to details like endpapers), and the pages of the book have been printed to look aged, which is a charming touch.

Camille Rose Garcia's Cheshire Cat

For me, though, the real magic of the book are the illustrations. Garcia's work is beautiful, playful, and haunting, which is very fitting for an edition of Alice in Wonderland. The characters in the illustrations are emotionally expressive and inventive. Her artwork really speaks to me, and is reminiscent of some of my favorite book illustrators of the early 20th Century. So artists such as Frank C. Pape, Mahlon Blaine, Felix Lorioux and even Edmund Dulac. I'm sure that a lot of people already have an edition of Alice in Wonderland on their shelf. The reason to add this book to your collection would be Camille Rose Garcia's illustrations.

On a final note, Camille Rose Garcia will be doing a book signing tour in March. She will be visiting LA, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. Check here for dates and locations.

Disney Unable to Reach Deal With Odeon Cinemas

I know I know - I declared that I wouldn't watch any more video about Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, but here are Matt Lucas (Tweedledum and Tweedledee) and Michael Sheen (the White Rabbit) talking about their roles at a news conference. Via

The BBC is reporting that Odeon Cinemas in the UK will not be screening Alice in Wonderland due to a disagreement over when the DVDs will be released. (It does look like Cineworld cinemas and The Vue chain will show the movie.)

Ireland's website, state.ie has details about a ticket giveaway.

Giveaway: Mad Hatter Bobblehead and White Rabbit Plush

Good news! I have a bunch of Alice in Wonderland bobbleheads and plushes which I will be giving away courtesy of FunKo. Here is the first batch. It's been pretty easy to enter these giveaways so far, so this time I'm asking everyone to name their favorite Alice in Wonderland character or scene in the book. For example, you might like the Pool of Tears best. Or maybe your favorite character is the Bandersnatch.

What is up for grabs: A Funko Mad Hatter Bobblehead and White Rabbit Plush.

Who will win: Two winners will be selected. One will get the Mad Hatter and the other will get the White Rabbit. To enter, leave a comment on this post with your favorite character or scene from Alice in Wonderland. If you are logged in to Google make sure your email is visible in your profile. Otherwise make sure that you leave an email address. (I've been trying to find a way around this and can't. If anybody knows of a way to add an email field to the Blogger comment form, please let me know!) Entrants must live in the US or Canada (my apologies to everybody else).

When and how the winner will be chosen: The giveaway ends two weeks away at midnight, on Tuesday, March 2. The winners will be selected randomly using random numbers generated by random.org.

Notification: Winners will be notified by email.

Interview with Mia Wasikowska and Character Descriptions

Another interview with Mia Wasikowska, here.

Here's another item that is kind of old news. Alternate names and descriptions of the characters of Alice in Wonderland for the upcoming movie. I wish I knew where these came from exactly, but ultimately they're from Disney. This will be useful to use in conjunction with the Glossary of Terms.

Character Descriptions
IRACEBETH, THE RED QUEEN (Helena Bonham Carter) is the tyrannical monarch of Underland. With her oversized head, fiery temper and propensity to scream for people’s heads to be chopped off, she rules her subjects through fear. “She’s got emotional problems,” says Bonham Carter. “It takes nothing, practically, for her to lose her temper. Her tantrums are that of a two-year-old.” Her younger sibling, the White Queen, has designs on the throne and crown that Iracebeth once stole from her.

ILOSOVIC STAYNE, THE KNAVE OF HEARTS (Crispin Glover) is the head of the Red Queen’s Army. Seven feet, six-inches tall, with a scarred face and a heart-shaped patch covering his left eye, Stayne is an arrogant, tricky character who follows the Red Queen’s every order. He’s the only one capable of pacifying her and calming her dramatic mood swings. “I am the martial element for the Red Queen,” says Glover. “The Red Queen has a fair amount of short-tempered reactions to things that people do, and so my character has to be quite diplomatic.” His darker side emerges in the shadows of the castle hallways.

TMCTWISP, THE WHITE RABBIT (voice of Michael Sheen) is always late, always in a hurry, always rushing about. Charged with finding Alice and bringing her back to Underland so that she can fulfill her destiny, he shows up at her garden party in an effort to lure her back down the rabbit hole. “He’s a warm character,” says Sheen, “but, at the same time, he can be quite fussy and quite strict with Alice as well. He has an edge to him, a nervous energy, always feeling like he’s behind time.  Time is very important to him, but he’s quite brave when called upon.”

MALLYMKUN, THE DORMOUSE (voice of Barbara Windsor) is a swashbuckling mouse in Underland who wears riding breeches.  She refuses to believe that the White Rabbit has found the right Alice, the one who can help return Underland to its true splendor, and is only too happy to poke poor Alice in the ankle with a hat pin when Alice insists she’s only dreaming.  But the tough little mouse comes through in a pinch when Alice is threatened by a clawing creature called a Bandersnatch.  Her loyalty to the Hatter is unmatched, and she willingly faces the prospect of death to stand by him.

ABSOLEM, THE CATERPILLAR (voice of Alan Rickman) is the all-knowing and absolute guardian of the Oraculum, an ancient document that depicts every major event, past, present and future, in Underland’s history. Alice is taken by the White Rabbit and the Tweedles to meet Absolem, so that he can ascertain whether she is, in fact, the real Alice who first visited Underland as a child, the Alice who is destined to help them. They find the bulbous blue caterpillar atop a mushroom in a mushroom forest surrounded by misty smoke. Several times Absolem challenges Alice to come to a better understanding of herself, forcing her to face the difficult question: “Who are you?”

Ton of New Concept Art for Alice

Finally got my hands on some really huge copies of Alice in Wonderland concept art, production art, and film stills, among other things. I'll be posting these over the next week or so because there is a lot of it. What we have here is Cheshire Cat, the Knave of Hearts, the March Hare, a Mushroom Forest, the White Rabbit, and two concept sketches by Tim Burton. One of these is the Red Queen and is very similar to this piece of concept art we ran a long time ago. I don't know for sure about all of the rest, but a lot of these are by Michael Kutsche, who is really an amazing artist. The Cheshire Cat picture on the top, in particular would make a great desktop wallpaper. (Source: Disney)

Very Cool Costumes and Photoshot of Alice

These are very cool photos of a Mad Tea Party in the woods. I love Alice in Wonderland photoshoots, and this one is a little more traditional than some of the others I've covered before. At the very least you should check them out to see the Tweedledee and Tweedledum costumes. Very awesome. Check it out here: Mogsterr on Flickr.

Lots of New Alice Gear and Art

It's really amazing when I can report something relevant to the Tim Burton move, Alice 2010, and today I have something to report. Not that I'm excited. It's a little hard to get very excited about nail polish. A while back I reported here that Disney is working with designers and manufacturers to come out with a slew of Alice in Wonderland 2010 related products. It looks like the first of the bunch will be OPI nail polish. OPI Nail Polish on Amazon Via.

Not related to the Tim Burton film - well KIND OF not related. Seeing as how 2010 will be the year of Alice. Mezco is accepting pre-orders for some Living Dead Dolls In Wonderland toys. Click here for Mezco Toys on Amazon.

More Alice Home Decor

If you're looking to decorate your room in all Alice in Wonderland gear, it's pretty hard to go wrong with this surprisingly complete collection of switch and outlet wall plates. Shown are Alice herself and the White Rabbit in a Disney-like forest scene. It's almost obsessive. You'll see what I mean when you get to the bottom.

Charm Bracelets for an Unbirthday

This post is nowhere near my birthday and will not be charming. Drink your tea and don't forget to move to the left or right, depending. Here is a song by Pogo to enjoy your unbirthday to:

It seems there are a lot of Alice in Wonderland choices when it comes to charm bracelets.

First there are Italian charm bracelet links like the Mad Tea Party links above. It looks like you can get different links (not just Alice), but yes including Alice in Wonderland links, and then swap them in and out of the charm bracelet.

Next up there are four different charm bracelet charms that are more like what I think of when I imagine a charm bracelet. They have the Queen of Hearts pictured above, White Rabbit, Alice herself, and Cheshire Cat. Strangely, the only way to get the Mad Hatter is to get the five in one bracelet.

Finally, for those who really want to go over the top, there is the "Ultimate Disney Classic Link Charm Bracelet".

From Russia With Love

Alice In Wonderland, Perfected in 1981 is the title of this article which is accompanied by YouTube videos of the entirety of two Russian animated films based on Lewis Carrol's books. There is Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Of course, they aren't as enjoyable if you don't know the language, but fans of the stories will know the gist of what's going on. There is a jar of Marmalade, a mad Tea Party where the guests change seats, and the pig-throwing Duchess.

We just recently talked about other movie adaptations of Alice in Wonderland. Enjoy the pictures...

Monday Alice News

Some real quickies:

Alice in Wonderland hand painted chess set.

Tim Burton, Helena Bonham Carter, and kids at Disneyland.

Not sure what this is. It's a comic book adaption of some sort: John Cassaday's "The Complete Alice In Wonderland" with a cover on which Alice looks kind of like a 16 year old boy.

Last, and most importantly, this woman, Melinda Foster of Rawtenstall, won a national cupcake contest in the U.K. with her Alice in Wonderland themed cupcakes. The winning cupcake? The White Rabbit. Awesome!

Alice Teaser Trailer Scene by Scene

Over at MTV, blogger Adam Rosenberg had the great idea to do a scene by scene rundown of the Alice Teaser Trailer. This appealed to my OCD and so I couldn't help myself. I had to do the same but different.

Cheshire Cat Wallpaper

Shot 1: Alice running through a garden, no doubt following a rabbit who may or may not be talking to himself about a very serious date and consulting a watch.

Shot 2: Alice leaning over a hole, and just between you and me, it really looks like she forced that twig to snap.

Shot 3: Alice goes head over heels and into the hole.

Shot 4: In case you didn't know, this is a Tim Burton film.

Shot 5: Down and down and down falls Alice. Readers of the original will remember quite a bit of exposition on the part of Alice during her fall. She expected the Antipathies. We are treated with lanterns, furniture, windows, cabinets, paintings, and barrels. Some careful scrubbing reveals a skull whizzing by. No ORANGE MARMALADE here.

Shot 5: We see Alice falling face first, and it looks like she's very tired.

Shot 6: Alice hits the ground. In the book this involved a heap of dry sticks and leaves, which I'm sure she would have preferred over a tile floor.

Shot 7: Alice blacks out and when she comes to, she's in a bathtub packed with ice clutching a note about how someone just stole her kidneys. NO NO that's not what happens. Alice comes to in a room with a tiny door and a bottle. We can't see it, but I bet the bottle says "Drink Me".

Shot 8: Alice drinks. She is no doubt experiencing deja vu.

Shot 9: Alice sets down the bottle and shrinks. There is a key in view on the table. Seeing as how her dress did not shrink with her, hopefully there is something nearby with a "wear me" sign on it.

Shot 10: Alice wandering around in front of the garden shown in some of the concept art panoramas. This is the place with the chatty flowers in front of the topiary garden. We see a flamingo topiary bird to the right. Alice has some serious decolletage now.

Shot 11: Alice walking through a giant mushroom forest with several friends. Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dodo, the White Rabbit, and is that the dormouse running ahead?

Shot 12: Alice and the White Queen on a balcony of a huge castle overlooking a chasm. They are standing next to a telescope. The White Queen looks a little like she's dancing. I keep pushing this out of my mind because it's too horrible to dwell on, but somehow the White Queen looks like Ali G here. Not a good look on her.

Shot 13: Twisty trees and the Cheshire Cat, appearing in head-only form, with a nice toothy smile. Nice gratuitous CGI iris action on the eyes after a blink.

Shot 14: Panning shot of Crispin Glover (!) as the Knave of Hearts, looking at what is presumably a map.

Shot 15: Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, throwing open some doors. The people inside, behind her are kind of grotesque. There is a man with an enormous forehead, a woman with three chins, a woman with huge ears, and a man who looks a little normal. She looks mad.

Shot 16: Whew! This is a lot of work. We have here a monster with black spots and a bunch of cool CGI red card soldiers. The monster roars.

Shot 17: It looks like Alice got a face full of roar, although I doubt that's really it. There is wind gusting in her face. THAT's confusing.

Shot 18: Alice is talking to Tweetledum and Tweedledee. An enormous bird swoops down and takes off with them. Alice ducks and then turns to watch them go.

Shot 19: Some frog pages open the same doors we just saw the Red Queen open. It looks like the Mad Hatter is walking out with card soldiers behind him. On the left is a mural of a gryphon, and on the right, the Jabberwock. There is someone riding the Jabberwock.

Shot 20: The Mad Hatter's hat is on the ground. Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter bends down to pick it up, and we get full-on shot of the Mad Hatter. LOOK-ENG GOOD.

Shot 21: In case you didn't know this was Johnny Depp, they're going to show you his name.

Shot 22: The Mad Hatter walks over a nicely done, traditional tea party and jumps down to...

Shot 23: Confront Alice, who is still small from drinking the shrinking potion.

Shot 24: The Mad Hatter tells Alice she is terribly late and calls her naughty. *groan* Behind him is what looks like a derelict windmill.

Shot 25: The Mad Hatter throws his hat and we see the next few things from the interior of his hat.

Shot 26: Disney - A Film by Tim Burton - Alice in Wonderland

Shot 27: The Mad Hatter, laughing.

Shot 28: The White Rabbit, looking a lot like Danny DeVito, pointing to his pocket watch as if to remind us:

Shot 29: "You've got a very important date." March 5th, 2010

Shot 30: It's not really its own shot but I make the rules around here. The zeroes of 2010 turn into Cheshire Cat eyes and we are treated to his toothy smile again.

Shot 31: Whew last one. The Mad Hatter unfurling two rolls of fabric by throwing them at the camera. Out shoot letters.

Shot 32: "Go through the looking glass in Disney Digital 3D IMAX 3D in select theaters" Then more writing. Credits. Danny Elfman. I'm not typing all this go watch it yourself to see the end.
